The Hakata Dontaku Festival, one of the three major festivals in Hakata, originated from the Hakata Matsubayashi Festival which was first held more than 800 years ago. The festival attracts more than 2 million people from Japan and abroad, and a variety of unique Dontaku groups perform in a parade along Meiji-dori Avenue and on performance stages set up in various locations throughout the city.
It is no exaggeration to say that Hakata's festival season starts with Dontaku. In this article, we will introduce some of the highlights of the Hakata Dontaku Festival.
On Thursday, May 2, the day before the main Hakata Dontaku Festival, The Dontaku Eve Festival, where flower carts are driven through town, is held. This event helps get people excited for the main event. In addition to the familiar Hakata Matsubayashi, this year a special guest, hitomi, will be performing on stage to get everyone warmed up for the main event. We hope you will enjoy the Dontaku Eve Festival as much as we do.

The flower car, which started as a flower train in 1947, will run for three days from May 2 (Thursday) to May 4 (Saturday and national holiday), 2024. This year's flower cars will feature Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, Marine World Uminonakamichi, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks & Avispa Fukuoka, the professional baseball and soccer teams, respectively, of Fukuoka.
In addition to the Dontaku Parade, the Hana Jidosha, or flower cars, will parade along the Meinohama area and Ohashi area for the first time in five years. During the parade period, you can check the current location and operation status of the flower cars from your smartphone or PC on the website “NISHITETSU HANAJIKARU NAVI”, so please check when the cars will be near your location.
The main event of Hakata Dontaku will be held on May 3 and 4, with a parade and various performance. On May 3 and 4, a total of four streams of the “Hakata Dontaku” parade, including three floats of the three gods of fortune (Fukujin, Ebisu, and Daikoku) and a children's float, will make their way around the city in celebration. There are 174 participating groups in the parade. Sightseeing areas will also return for the first time in five years starting in 2019, and this year visitors can enjoy Dontaku with no restrictions.
Hakata Matsubayashi, which opens the Dontaku Parade, is made up of four floats and travels around the city in celebration in addition to the parade. The god of fortune, named after Fukurokuju (a god of wealth and happiness), wears a long, papier-mâché head and a mask of the god of fortune, and rides on a horse with a yellow silk uchikake over a white kimono and a Chinese fan in his hand.
The male Ebisu wears a crow's cap and Ebisu's mask, and rides on horseback in a brocade sleeveless haori jacket with a fishing rod in his right hand and a big dai on his left side. The female Ebisu wears a heavenly crown, holds a jade in her left hand, and rides on a horse in a red haori jacket with a hinoki fan in her hand.
Daikoku wears a yellow silk hood and a Daikoku mask. Daikoku wears a hood of yellow silk and a mask of Daikoku, and carries a large fish sack with a white hakama on his back. In his hand he holds a small mallet. They ride on horses with rice bales on either side. Each horse is surrounded by a group of men dressed in clothing called kamishimo and tatsuzuke, and each horse is accompanied by three kasaboko umbrellas.
Children wear crowns and pull a gallery stand with a girl wearing a dancing gown and a scarlet cape. They dance gracefully to the accompaniment of traditional instruments. A group of adults also accompanies the dancers. Another highlight of the festival is the Hakata Matsubayashi, a folkloric event that is the origin of the Hakata Dontaku festival.
